Riga Port sees 26% drop in cargo turnover in eight months

The Freeport of Riga handled 15.819 mln tons of cargo in the first eight months of the year, which is a reduction of 26% from the same period a year ago, according to information released by the port.

Bulk cargo, which dominated the port’s cargo structure in the first eight months of this year, declined 32.1% y-o-y to 9.083 mln tons. Handling of general cargo decreased 12% to 4.865 mln tons and reloading of liquid cargo was down 23.6% to 1.87 tons.

Containerized cargo made up 19.2% of the overall cargo turnover and reached 3.038 mln tons in the first eight months, down 6.3% from the previous year.


Coal, which accounted for the second largest share of cargo reloaded in the port, or 14.4%, decreased 2.9 times y-o-y to 2.274 mln tons.


Reloading of oil products was down 24.6% on year to 1.829 mln tons in the eight months of this year, making up 11.6% of total cargo turnover.


Handling of timber reached 1.427 mln tons, down 16.5%, handling of wood pellets rose 7% to 1.388 mln tons and grain cargo grew 9.3% to 1.292 mln tons.


As reported, the Freeport of Riga handled 32.762 mln tons of cargo in 2019, which is a reduction of 10.1% from a year before.


Riga is the largest Latvian port by cargo turnover and also by the number of ship passengers.
