Thousands of people have taken to the streets in Minsk and other cities to protest the result of Sunday's controversial presidential election.

On Monday, Tikhanovskaya refused to accept Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko's victory in the election and declared herself the winner and urged the incumbent president to hand over power.

The 37-year-old teacher of English decided to run for president after her husband, Sergey Tikhanovsky, a popular blogger, was arrested. She has promised to hold a new, fair election in if elected.

A number of members of her election headquarters have been arrested over the past week, too.
