Riga Port sees 26.7% drop in cargo turnover in H1
Bulk cargo, which dominated the port’s cargo structure in
the first six months of this year, declined 31% year-on-year to 6.949 mln
tons. Handling of general cargo decreased 17.5% to 3.455 mln tons and
reloading of liquid cargo was down 24.5% to 1.439 tons.
Containerized cargo made up 19% of the overall cargo
turnover and reached 2.252 mln tons in the first six months, down 7.4% from
the previous year.
Coal, which accounted for the second largest share of cargo
reloaded in the port, or 14.2%, decreased 3.1 times y-o-y to 1.685 mln
tons.
Reloading of oil products was down 25.5% on year to 1.406 mln
tons in the six months of this year, making up 11.9 % of total cargo turnover.
Handling of wood pellets rose 14.3% to 1.07 mln tons and
grain cargo grew 14.5% to 913,600 tons.
As reported, the Freeport of Riga handled 32.762 mln tons of cargo in 2019, which is a reduction of 10.1% from a year before.
Riga is the largest Latvian port by cargo turnover and also by the number of ship passengers.
