Road hauliers again filling up at stations in Estonia

BC, Tallinn, 13.07.2020.Print version
Since the difference in the price of diesel sold at filling stations in Estonia and in neighboring countries such as the other Baltic states or Russia has narrowed to almost zero, Estonian road hauliers are no longer keen to have their trucks fill up in other countries, Postimees reported over the weekend, cites LETA/BNS.

It said that, first, diesel in Estonia now costs sometimes less than in Lithuania, whereas, second, it's easier to get a refund of input VAT at home.

As result, retail sales of diesel in Estonia grew 8.4 percent on year.

According to hauliers' organizations, it is not only cross-border purchases of fuel in the other Baltic countries that are returning to Estonia, as also the operators that previously had their trucks fill up in Russia are turning back to diesel sold in Estonia.

In accordance with amendments that took effect in May, the excise duty on diesel in Estonia was reduced to a level equal with that of Lithuania, meaning 37.2 cents per liter.

Postimees also pointed out that, fiscally, cheaper diesel means 76.6 million euros in foregone revenue for the Estonian state.
