Cargo turnover of Riga Port down 25% in January

The Freeport of Riga handled 2.13 mln tons of cargo in January 2020, which is a reduction of 25% against the same period a year ago, according to information released by the port, informed LETA/BNS.

Bulk cargo, which dominated the port’s cargo structure in January this year, declined 33.1 % year-on-year to 1.265 mln tons. Handling of general cargo decreased 9.2% to 606,200 tons and reloading of liquid cargo was down 8.5% to 259,300 tons.


The share of coal shrank to 18.3% in January this year from 36.2% of all cargo reloaded in January 2018. In the full 2019, coal made up 31.6% of all cargo reloaded in the port, down from 39 % in 2018. In 2017 coal accounted for 35% and in 2016 for 35.9% of all cargo reloaded in the port.


Coal, which accounted for the largest share of cargo reloaded in the port, decreased 2.6 times y-o-y to 389,900 tons.


Containerized cargo made up 17.8%, timber 15.7%, oil products 11.9% and chemical cargo 5.7% of all cargo reloaded at the port last year.


The Freeport of Riga handled 32.762 mln tons of cargo in 2019, which is a reduction of 10.1% from a year before. In January 2019, the port handled 2.842 mln tons of cargo.

Riga is the largest Latvian port by cargo turnover and also by the number of ship passengers.
