Parlt greenlights Lithuanian Railway's overhaul

BC, Vilnius, 20.12.2018.Print version
The Seimas of Lithuania on Thursday backed plans for the overhaul of the state-run railways company Lietuvos Gelezinkeliai (Lithuanian Railways), with 69 votes in favor and nine abstentions, reported LETA/BNS.

Under the plan, instead of the railway company's three existing directorates, including Passenger Transportation Directorate, Freight Transportation Directorate and the Railway Infrastructure Directorate, three separate enterprises will be established and Lietuvos Gelezinkeliai will own their shares. Lietuvos Gelezinkeliai will remain a solely state-owned company.

Transport Minister Rokas Masiulis told the Seimas the country's strategic enterprise will remain in the state's hands but will become more transparent, financially-stable and more easily managed. It will also better ensure the rights and interests of railway carriers, and is likely to provide higher returns for the state.

Failure to overhaul Lietuvos Gelezinkeliai would lead to Brussels launching an infringement procedure against Lithuania.

Lithuania has chosen the German railway reform as a model for the overhaul of Lietuvos Gelezinkeliai
