Riga to spend EUR 138,000 on traffic lights upgrade

BC, Riga, 01.11.2017.Print version
The Riga City Council Communications and Transport Affairs Committee today approved an additional EUR 25,933 allocation for an upgrade of the city's traffic lights system, with the project's total costs estimated at EUR 137,933, LETA was told at the city council.

Emils Jakrins, a representative of the city council's Traffic Department, said that the price offered by the only bidder in the tender to upgrade the traffic lights in Riga proved higher than originally planned.

Members of the city council voiced concerns that with only one bidder, the procurement procedure might have been unfair, but Jakrins dismissed these concerns.

He said that the traffic lights in Riga would be upgraded during this and next year.

Additional funding for this purpose would be provided from the money saved in the Traffic Department's budget on the construction of the Brasa station overpass.

Originally, the city council planned to spend EUR 112,000 on the traffic lights upgrade.

The Riga City Council has yet to approve the allocation.
