During the meeting with the Kazakh deputy premier, Vejonis noted with satisfaction that after his meetings with Kazakh officials in Astana in July, cooperation between the two countries has been yielding practical results, such as the launch of the container train route China (Urumqi)-Kazakhstan-Russia-Riga. The new route' sea extension will reach the Dutch port of Rotterdam.

"I believe that Latvia's participation in the international exhibition Astana Expo 2017 has provided our countries with an additional opportunity to develop bilateral political and economic cooperation," the president's office quoted Vejonis as saying.

The president also indicated that Latvia is interested in developing direct air traffic with Kazakhstan, which would promote mutual contacts in business, tourism and other areas. There is also a considerable potential for cooperation in education, ICT, as well as environmental and clean technology spheres.
