Automated emergency call for road accidents to be launched in Latvia in October

BC, Riga, 22.09.2017.Print version
The Latvian Interior Ministry and mobile operators have completed the necessary preparations for launching the eCall, a telecommunication service aimed to provide an automatic notification of a road traffic accident, the ministry’s representative Gunta Skrebele told LETA.

When a motor vehicle gets into a traffic accident, the emergency call will be made by an automatic system built in the car, Skrebele said.

The service will be available to the automobiles equipped with the technology supporting such automated calls. Under EU requirements, the eCall system has to be installed in all automobiles of the latest models as of 2018.

To launch the eCall system, Latvia’s mobile operators and the Interior Ministry carried out preparations, creating infrastructure allowing to receive, record and process such calls. The State Fire and Rescue Service will be the agency receiving the eCalls in Latvia.

The eCall system is intended to reduce the time rescuers need to respond to traffic emergencies, which is turn is expected to cut the number of road fatalities.
