Cargo turnover at Riga port down 4.8% in 8 months

The Riga Freeport in the first eight months of 2017 reloaded 22.716 million tons of cargo, which is by 4.8% lower than in the respective period last year, the port reported LETA.

Bulk cargos accounted for 14.242 million tons of Riga port’s eight-month cargo turnover, up 3.4% against the first eight months of 2016. Handling of general cargos rose 9.2% to 4.532 million tons, and reloading of liquid cargos fell 33.8% to 3.942 million tons.


According to the port’s information, coal dominated the structure of cargos reloaded in the Freeport of Riga in the eight months of this year. Reloading of coal increased 5.2% year-on-year to 8.374 million tons, or 36.9% of all cargos.


Oil products made up 17.1% of all cargos handled in the port in the eight-month period, followed by container cargos with 12.3%, timber with 8.1% and chemical cargos with 7.4%.


Of the 2.721 million tons of cargo reloaded in the port in August, bulk cargos accounted for 1.841 million tons, general cargos for 545,800 tons and liquid cargos for 334,700 tons.


In the first eight months of 2016, the Freeport of Riga handled 23.873 million tons, and annual cargo turnover last year was 37.07 million tons, down 5.5% from 2015.


Riga is the largest Latvian port in terms of both cargo turnover and passengers.
