Via Baltica from Kaunas to Warsaw to be reconstructed by 2023

The stretch of the Via Baltica highway between Kaunas and Warsaw should be fully reconstructed by 2023, says Lithuania's Prime Minister Saulius Skvernelis, cites LETA/BNS.

Lithuania intends to revamp the stretch of the highway between Kaunas and Marijampole until 2019, with the stretch to the Polish border to be put in order later.

Skvernelis said he had been assured by his Polish counterpart, Beata Szydlo, earlier this week that the Polish administration would conduct the work on its side of the border.

"The road between Kaunas and Warsaw will be fully renovated until 2023. We expect it to be a highway or a road of the European network," the Lithuanian prime minister told journalists.

Accidents are frequent on the Lithuanian part of Via Baltica, where cargo vehicles account for about 30% of the traffic.
