Latvian PM: tax evasion through car dealer schemes amounts to EUR 50 mln

BC, Riga, 09.08.2017.Print version
As a result of the tax evasion schemes used by car dealers, the Latvian budget has lost about EUR 50 million in unpaid taxes, Prime Minister Maris Kucinskis (Greens/Farmers) said on the LNT commercial television on August 9th, cites LETA.

He said the efforts should continue to fight the illegal practices which had already become a routine.

Kucinskis stressed that the State Revenue Service had repeatedly asked ss.lv classified ads portal to provide information on suspicious transactions before closing down the portal. Similarly, such information is reported to the tax authority by banks and other financial institutions, he said.

Morevoer, the methods used by fraudsters have become more sophisticated, the prime minister added.

As reported, the State Revenue Service has decided to halt operations of ss.lv, Latvia's largest classified advertisements website, as the portal refused to inform the revenue service about automobile dealers who had failed to register with the tax authority. The State Revenue Service also ordered Internet, a company related to ss.lv owners, to suspend its business. The popular classifieds portal now operates as ss.com.
