At the end of the last week, yet unidentified persons stole 234 meters of rails from a closed railroad section in Gulbene District, as reported the state-owned railroad company Latvijas dzelzcels (LDz).

State Police Press and Public Relations Office informed LETA that railroad workers inspecting the railroad discovered that rail tracks and fastenings were missing from the 100th to the 177th kilometer of the railroad track Gulbene-Vecumi-state border.

Investigation is under way.

LDz informed that the total weight of rails and fastenings stolen is around 14,290 tons and their worth is estimated to be around LVL 3,372, if assessing their worth as scrap metal.

In the past year's time, LDz has registered a number of rail theft cases. Criminal investigation was carried out in each such case, some of the thieves were found and arrested.

According to LETA's archive, a similar theft case took place in the same railroad section in March last year.
