Today’s strike at Berlin airport has affected travel plans of almost 600 passengers of Latvia’s national carrier airBaltic, the company’s spokesman Janis Vanags reported.

He said that airBaltic today had to cancel six flights connecting Berlin with Riga and Vilnius.

"The airline's priority is to contact all passengers and offer them alternative travel opportunities with the nearest flights of airBaltic and other airlines," said Vanags.

He underscored that this is another aviation strike week in Europe that brings harm to the economy. According to Airlines 4 Europe (A4E) association, this week almost 1,500 flights have been cancelled across Europe and about 10,000 flights have been delayed, affecting more than a million passengers. The aviation strikes have brought EUR 12 bln loss to European economies in the past seven years.

The aviation sector in Latvia accounts for 3% of the gross domestic product and ensures 2% of all workplaces.

airBaltic serves over 60 destinations from its home base in Riga, Latvia.
