In January 2017, the Freeport of Riga handled 3.204 million tons of various cargo, which was a 1.9 percent drop from the same month a year ago when the port handled 3.267 million tons of cargo, Vita Gerharde, a representative of the Freeport of Riga Authority, told BC.

Gerharde said that when comparing the port’s monthly cargo turnover results, it is necessary to bear in mind that January 2016 was one of the most successful months of last year and that in January 2017 the port’s cargo turnover exceeded the average monthly result for last year by 3.7%, suggesting of steady operations and allowing for a fairly optimistic outlook on 2017.

“The number of ships handled at the beginning of the year also showed a positive trend. In January of this year, the number of passenger ships, container ships, tankers and dry cargo vessels increased against January 2016,” the port’s representative said.

In the segment of general cargos January 2017 was especially successful for the Freeport of Riga, which reloaded 555,200 tons of various general cargos in the first month of the year, beating the result of January 2016 by 34.7%. This growth was achieved primarily thanks to an increased turnover of container cargo.

In January 2017, the Freeport of Riga also reloaded 1.914 tons of bulk cargo. Handling of coal at the port rose by 2.6 percent year-on-year to 1.2 mln tons.

The turnover of liquid cargos, meanwhile, remained low, but the segment of oil products showed a positive trend, said Gerharde. The port reloaded 728,400 tons of oil products in January 2017, which was 16.1 percent less than a year ago, but it was still the best monthly result since May 2016, the port’s representative said.

The number of ship passengers jumped after Tallink started operating a second ferry in Riga, Gerharde said. In January 2017, the number of ship passengers in Riga grew by 30.4% from January 2016 to 43,600. Arrivals of passenger ships surged 58.8% y-o-y.
