Railway electrification project in Latvia could be suspended if it affects budget

BC, Riga, 18.01.2017.Print version
If the planned railway electrification project affects budget resources, the project might be suspended, said Latvian Prime Minister Maris Kucinskis (Greens/Farmers) in an interview with commercial LNT television on Wednesday, writes LETA.

He said that EUR 347 mln of the necessary EUR 519 mln will be co-financed from the EU funds, but the state budget resources will not be used for the project.

In his opinion, funding for the electrification project should come from other sectors. He repeatedly said that the project as such is valuable and should be implemented.

As reported, the Latvian government in a closed meeting on Tuesday supported the railway electrification project. Even though initially it was planned to start the project in the direction of Ventspils, the final decision has been to start in the direction of Riga. Thus, during the first stage of the project between 2020 and 2025, the Daugavpils-Krustpils-Riga (Skirotava) lines on the route to Riga will be electrified, with a total cost of EUR 519 mln.
