Estonian Transiidikeskus says there are enough goods to carry on Rail Baltic route

BC, Tallinn, 17.01.2017.Print version
Transit operator Transiidikeskus AS which operates at Estonia's main merchant port of Muuga is waiting for the Rail Baltic European-gauge railway because in the next few years trade to Russia will definitely not recover and there would be enough goods to carry on the railway, the daily Eesti Paevaleht reports noted LETA/BNS.

"Sadly the situation is such at present that there are sanctions in place. This cancels out our beautiful location on the west-east and east-west directions. It is no secret that Estonia is the European Union member state that has suffered the most due to sanctions. We feel it very strongly in our company," Transiidikeskus CEO Erik Lainvee said in an interview to the newspaper.

According to Laidvee there is no reason to doubt that there are enough goods to carry on Rail Baltic. "The goods are also carried at present, but by sea. We need to set up a logistical chain and start selling it to customers," he said.

Rail Baltic would be used to import and export to and from Finland as well as to carry Asian and Russian goods, Laidvee said. "Our studies have shown that there would even be more carriage in the direction of Asia," he added.

According to Laidvee, Transiidikeskus will definitely start moving product flows already before Rail Baltic is built and hopefully even in 2017. "The only problem is that on the Lithuania-Poland border goods have to be reloaded to a European-gauge railway, which costs time and money," he said.
