Rail freight in Latvia down 14% in 2016

2016 year, freight transportation using the Latvian railway infrastructure decreased 14% or 7.8 mln tons from 2015 to 47.8 mln tons, the state-owned railway company Latvijas Dzelzcels (LDz) said LETA.

In December 2016 freight transportation in Latvia reached 4.9 mln tons, up 1.5% from December 2015.


Coal transportation in December 2016 rose 28.4% y-o-y to 2.2 mln tons. Transportation of coal in full 2016 reached 16 mln tons, or by 16 % less than in 2015.


Transportation of ferrous metals in December last year amounted to 161,000 tons, up 2.4 times y-o-y, and in full 2016 in total of 1.8 mln tons of this cargo was transported, up 43.1% from 2015.


Transportation of oil products by rail accounted for 1.2 mln tons in December, down 36% year-on-year, and for 16.6 mln tons in 2016, which is a drop by 23.6% y-o-y.


Transportation of timber increased 8.8% to 148,000 tons in December and by 4.9% to 1.6 mln tons in 2016.


Land transit grew dropped 23.8% in December to 96,000 tons, and 11.4% in 2016 to 1.5 mln tons, import cargos accounted for 4,4 mln tons, which is about the same as a year ago, while in 2016 import cargos dropped 12.9% from 2015 to 42 mln tons. At the same time, export cargos reached 224,000 tons in December, up 12.6% y-o-y, and 2.4 mln tons in 2016, dropping 16.3% from 2015.


In 2015, 55.645 mln tons were carried by rail, down 2.4% from 2014.
