Estonian shipper Tallink does not rule out Riga-Helsinki ferry service in future

BC, Tallinn, 28.11.2016.Print version
The listed Estonian shipper Tallink is not making plans at the moment for a direct ferry link between the Latvian capital Riga and Finnish capital Helsinki in connection with a sharp rise in alcohol excise duty in Estonia but does not rule out launching such a service in the future, writes LETA/BNS,

"At the moment we have no such plans, but we always keep close watch of market developments and rule out nothing off the bat provided it's expedient," told Tallink group's communication manager Luulea Laane.

Estonia's new government coalition plans to raise the excise duty on beer by 65%, to 13.7 cents per percentage by volume for a liter of beer, as of July 2017, and by 166% from the present to 22.09 cents per percentage by volume for a liter of beer by 2020.

"In deciding on the rise in alcohol excise duty rates it has been reckoned with that cross-border trade between Finland and Estonia will decrease somewhat and will increase somewhat between Latvia and Estonia," Maria Murakas, of the Finance Ministry's public relations department, told  last week.
