Saeima today approved in the final reading legislative amendments stipulating that Latvian citizens may use foreign-registered cars in Latvia, but will have to pay a tax, wirtes LETA.

According to the present legislation, a Latvian citizen or non-citizen, a person with a temporary or permanent residence permit in Latvia is not allowed to permanently drive a foreign-registered car in Latvia, with some exceptions.

The amendments provide that this will now be possible by paying a respective tax – EUR 10 per day, EUR 250 per month, EUR 600 per a six-month period and EUR 1,000 per year.

The tax should not be paid for transport vehicles that are registered with the diplomatic, consular services or representations of international organizations.

The amendments are adopted in line with the bills accompanying next year’s budget. The planned revenues from the tax in next year’s budget reach EUR 6.4 mln.
