Freight shipping by rail in Latvia down 19.8%

In January-June 2016, freight shipping by rail in Latvia dropped by 19.8% from the same period a year ago to 24.1 mln tons compared to the respective period last, the state-owned Latvijas Dzelzcels railway company reported, cites LETA.

This year a new type of cargo has appeared – ores – and shipping of this kind of cargos reached 272,000 tons.

 

Transportation of black metals rose by 41.7% to 928,000 tons, while transportation of timber increased 14.4% to 820,000 tons. Transportation of chemical cargos declined 14.8% to 755,000 tons, while grain and flour products were transported at 722,000 tons, up 12.5%.

 

Domestic cargo transportation rose 20.4% compared to the first six months of last year. Export cargo transportation dropped 4.5% to 1.38 mln tons. Import shipments through Latvian ports declined 18.6% to 21.35 mln tons.

 

Transportation of oil and oil products accounted for 9.47 mln tons, down 23.4% year-on-year, while coal was transported at 7.12 mln tons or by 32.3% less than last year.

Transportation of mineral fertilizers reached 2.02 mln tons, down 2.6% from the respective period last year.
