EIB money to go towards Vilnius airport runway reconstruction

BC, Vilnius, 20.06.2016.Print version
The bulk of the 30-million-euro loan granted to the Vilnius Airport will go towards reconstruction of the runway, says Gediminas Almantas, director of Lietuvos Oro Uostai (Lithuanian Airports), a state-owned company that manages the airports of Vilnius, Kaunas and Palanga, reports LETA/BNS.

In his words, this is the biggest of the planned airport development projects.

"This is the money for the projects we have planned for the end of this year and for next year. It is mainly the Vilnius runway project, which will probably be the most expensive, and a few other infrastructure projects," Almantas told BNS.

He said the loan from the European Investment Bank (EIB) was provided under better conditions than loans from commercial banks.

Guaranteed by the European Fund for Strategic Investments (EFSI), also known as the Juncker plan, the 15-year loan makes about 44% of the total project value of 69 million euros, the Lithuanian Finance Ministry said. Almantas said the project would be financed by both EIB loan money and EU funds.

Reconstruction of the Vilnius runway is scheduled for the summer of 2017, causing the airport to close for 35 days between July 14 and Aug. 18. In Almantas' words, the reconstruction is estimated at up to 30 million euros.
