TS Laevad looking for two backup vessels for Tallinn

BC, Tallinn, 17.06.2016.Print version
TS Laevad, the subsidiary of the state-owned Port of Tallinn that is to take over operation of ferry traffic between Estonia's large western islands and the mainland in the fall, is searching for two backup vessels for the eventuality that the ferries currently under construction cannot be put into service for some reason, the regional newspaper Hiiu Leht says, cites LETA/BNS.

The governor of Hiiu County, Riho Rahuoja, told TS Laevad CEO Kaido Padar on June 15th that the decision on the residents of Hiiumaa Island getting the ships promised them ought to have been made already. Padar parried that the company has not decided all details yet but added that he is fully aware of the islanders' justified expectations.

The company's aim is to put the ferries built in Turkey into service on the Hiiumaa line and it's looking for backup ships for the Saaremaa line, Padar explained.

Hiiu Leht has information that TS Laevad is looking for two replacement ships in case it will have to rely on plan B and two ferries out of four are not finished by the deadline. Padar said possible vessels exist but it's too early to disclose their names.

In the longer run TS Laevad plans to either charter or buy a fifth vessel in addition to four new ferries anyway. Padar is optimistic about the ferries under construction and believes that three of them – the Tiiu, Leiger and Toll –- will be ready to enter service on Oct. 1.
