Latvia is experienced in handling container cargos that are shipped by rail, and the Baltic country’s convenient geographical location and developed transport infrastructure are advantages that might make it attractive to Chinese entrepreneurs, Transport Ministry state secretary Kaspars Ozolins said at a business forum in China, cites LETA.

Speaking at the international investment and construction forum in the Macau Special Administrative Region (SAR) of China, the Latvian Transport Ministry's representative noted that Latvian ports ensure regular connections with Scandinavia, Germany and other countries of the region, as well as regular ferry traffic between Latvia and Germany and Sweden.

On the level of companies active work is ongoing to build new partnerships and find new business niches, especially in the segment of contained cargos.

"We are following the rebirth of the Silk Road or the Asia-Europe connection. Given our geographical location, transport infrastructure and the fact that Latvia has Eastern European-gauge railway and we are also involved the Rail Baltica European-gauge railway project, we can ensure the most efficient solution for cargo deliveries from China to Northern Europe and Scandinavia," said Ozolins.

He also indicated that Latvia participates in developing trans-European supply chains and that it adopts its transport policy to China's activities under its One Belt One Road initiative.

Ozolins noted the 1st China-Central and Eastern Europe (CEEC) countries' transport ministers' meeting (16+1 format), which took place in Riga in May, as a good example of Latvian-Chinese cooperation.

The first meeting of transport ministers from 16 Central and Eastern European countries and China (16+1) in Riga adopted the Riga Guidelines for facilitating development of an integrated transport corridor between China and Europe.

The Riga Guidelines are intended to facilitate development of effective Trans-Eurasian supply chains, strengthen cooperation in transport and logistics to build and improve integrated transport corridors between China and Europe, thus ensuring sustainable and effective cargo transportation. The ministers were also determined to improve information exchange between the countries to strengthen cooperation between the private and public sectors.
