Port of Tallinn: 1 ferry might be 3 months late

BC, Tallinn, 23.05.2016.Print version
One of the ferries being built in Poland at the Remontowa shipyard might be three months late, member of the supervisory board of Port of Tallinn Mart Luik said, cites LETA/BNS.

Three of the ferries being built for the state-owned port company to operate between mainland Estonia and large western islands will be finished in time, while the fourth one might be three months late, Luik said on the Keskpaevatund radio broadcast of Kuku radio. According to Luik, a problem bigger than one ship being late would be if something happened to one of the other new ferries. In that case TS Laevad, a subsidiary of Port of Tallinn, might temporarily use the older ferries.

According to Luik, the two years given to build new ferries is a very short time and Estonia's order was put on the general line at the Polish shipyard.

Merike Saks, secretary general of the Estonian Ministry of Economic Affairs and Communications and a member of the supervisory board of the state-owned port company Port of Tallinn, told the regional daily Hiiu Leht on Tuesday that one of the ferries ordered by the company for operating between mainland and the large western islands will not be finished by the deadline.

"At present it is hard to say what really happened, but it is all connected to the bribery scandal [of the leaders of Port of Tallinn – Hiiu Leht]. This means that the contract which has been signed in Poland as well as Turkey is the same, but it is not beneficial for the Port of Tallinn and is actually more beneficial for the builder," Saks said.
