German and Latvian ports should look for new opportunities and solutions in their further cooperation, representatives of both countries agreed, reports LETA.

One of the opportunities is transportation of China’s container cargoes from Hamburg port to Latvia and further in transit to the CIS countries. The large container cargos from Chinese ports are transported to the largest European ports, for example, Hamburg, and then they would be transported to the east. Another development direction might be development of such shipping lines that may carry passengers and cars across the Baltic Sea, including to Riga.

Representatives of the German ports in a press conference on Thursday confirmed that they wish to deepen cooperation with the Baltic Sea countries. Hamburg is one of the largest European ports, but its cooperation with the Baltic States is important.

For Riga Germany is the second most important route in Europe after the Netherlands, therefore it is important to promote cooperation with these ports. At present trucks are transporting container cargos through Poland and Lithuania, but short-distance transportation by sea would be a new solution, said Riga Port deputy administrator Edgars Suna.

On May 19th, a news conference at the Riga Freeport Administration about the German-Latvian Maritime Forum intended to improve German-Latvian cooperation in transport and logistics was held.
