Parnu wants money for airport's overhaul

BC, Tallinn, 06.05.2016.Print version
The Association of Municipalities of Parnu County, the City of Parnu and the Parnu county government have filed a request for funding for the renovation of the airport of Parnu from the 2017 state budget, informs LETA/BNS.

They say the city and the municipalities have commissioned several surveys to determine the scale of necessary renovation works and their cost, from which it appears that renovation of the airport would cost 13 million euros, much less than the previous estimate of 25-35 million euros. Besides, municipalities of Parnu County are ready to cover the cost of a part of the project, such as building access roads and other infrastructure.

"Foreign tourists visiting Parnu via the airport would leave about 70 million euros in Estonia in the next five years," Lauri Luur, chairman of the Association of Municipalities of Parnu County, said in a press release.

Parnu Mayor Romek Kosenkranius said that in a situation where Rail Baltic is still a remote prospect the airgate is extremely important for the resort city, helping to reduce seasonality and lure more well-off clients, including conference tourists, to the city round the year.
