Belgium's dredging and marine works company Jan de Nul has deepened the outer navigation channel of the Lithuanian seaport of Klaipeda in works worth 1 million euros, informs LETA/BNS.

“Deepening of the outer area to the depth of 15.5 meters has been completed at an approximately 1.2-kilometer-long section. This section is important for navigation, it has been deepened and stones have been removed,” Arvydas Vaitkus, CEO of the port authority, said at a news conference on March 7th.

“What’s important is that deeper draught ships will now be able to maintain higher speed and reach the port’s gate and the port area safely even in more severe weather conditions,” he said.

The contractor had removed 51,000 cubic meters of soil, which was a significant step towards the target depth of 17 meters, Vaitkus said.

Last March, Jan de Nul was awarded a two-year contract, worth 2.896 million euros, for dredging and deepening of the Klaipeda port area.

The port of Klaipeda wants to reach the depth of 17 meters by 2018–2020. Related investment is estimated to amount to 332.7 million euros by 2018.
