Nearly 16,000 applications submitted for reimbursement of Estonian Air tickets

BC, Tallinn, 09.02.2016.Print version
The 8th February was the first day to seek for compensation for tickets bought from the bankrupt state-owned airline Estonian Air and 15,806 applications were submitted, writes LETA.

As of Tuesday, no new applications can be submitted. Reimbursements will be made in a few months, spokesman for the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Communications Rasmus Ruuda told BNS.

The government last November decided to allocated 6.2 million euros from the reserve to compensate for the airline tickets because of the company ending it operations.

The European Commission's Directorate General for Competition ruled at the beginning of November that state aid provided to Estonian Air was not legal and the airline has to pay the money back to the state. The national carrier stopped flying on Nov. 7 and filed for bankruptcy on Nov. 20. It was declared bankrupt at the end of December.

The Estonian government made repeated equity injections into Estonian Air and gave rescue aid to the company in 2008-2014 amounting to approximately 130 million euros. The European Commission opened in February 2013 an in-depth inquiry into support measures granted to the troubled airline, having doubts about the measures being in line with EU state aid rules.

Trustees in the bankruptcy say creditors have claims worth some 129 million euros on the bankrupt airline.
