During the first stage of the Rail Baltica high speed rail project, which has been allocated EUR 238 million worth of EU funding, construction in Latvia will commence with the reconstruction of the Riga Central Rail Station and the Riga Bus Terminal, which will be followed by the construction of tracks to Riga Airport and a rail station at the airport, Neils Balgalis, a spatial planning expert of RB Latvija, told LETA.

He said that the funds allotted should cover the first stage of the project.

The project in the territory of Latvia has been divided into three stages – the central stage, as well as the southern and northern stages. Construction will first begin with the central stage, which is also the most complicated stage technically.

According to Balgalis, the rail tracks in central Riga will be next to the already existing ones. The track will go along the existing track to Tornakalns stations, and from there new tracks will be laid to the airport.

The Rail Baltica project deals with construction of a new 1,435 millimeter standard-gauge railroad in the Baltic countries. The European Commission has allotted Latvia EUR 238 million for the first round of the project.

By 2020, the Baltic States will receive a total of EUR 442.2 million (co-funding of 81.82 percent) for this project.

The Rail Baltica standard-gauge railroad in Latvia will be 265 kilometers long, going through Salacgriva, Limbazi, Seja, Incukalns, Ropazi, Garkalne, Stopini, Salaspils, Kekava, Baldone, Iecava, Olaine, Marupe, Bauska regions and Riga.
