Klaipeda stevedores concerned about new rail freight rates

BC, Vilnius, 25.11.2015.Print version
Stevedoring companies active in the Lithuanian port of Klaipeda fear that they may lose some of their cargoes if Lietuvos Gelezinkeliai (Lithuanian Railways) were to increase its rail freight rates, in particular as Latvia’s freight carrier by rail has decided to lower its rates, the Verslo Zinios business daily reports on Wednesday, cites LETA/BNS.

The Lithuanian railway company says it will not hike its rail freight rates. However, it still has not disclosed its plans in relation to charges for additional services.

According to Stasys Gudvalis, director of the Freight Transportation Directorate at Lietuvos Gelezinkeliai, the railway company and its Belarus counterpart have signed an agreement not to increase the rates for transit freight carried between Lithuania and Belarus.

This week, LDZ Cargo, the cargo subsidiary of Latvia’s railway operator, has said that it will lower its rates by 3% next year, given the decrease in fuel prices in global markets.
