Ireland will not ship municipal waste treatment residue to Lithuania

BC, Vilnius, 12.10.2015.Print version
Irish company Foras Fuels Ltd informed the Environmental Protection Agency (AAA) under the Ministry of Environment of Lithuania that it will not ship municipal waste treatment residue to Lithuania after the AAA suspended the licence of Lithuanian company UAB AV Investicija Plius to import such cargo, reports LETA/ELTA.

Environmental Protection Department (RAAD) has tightened the supervision of the state seaport, which will be in force during the weekend as well.

On Thursday, the AAA issued a notice to Ireland's National TFC Office, responsible for international waste freight, that it had suspended international waste freight permit for UAB AV Investicija Plius.

The permit was suspended after its terms were breached. On 25-26 August, Klaipeda (RAAD) investigation determined that 3,000 tonnes of waste were imported from Ireland to Lithuania and transferred not for sorting but for incineration. Based on the rules, the company was authorised to import waste for sorting in its recycling facility in Panevezys.

However, UAB AV Investicija Plius imported the waste via an intermediate company and transferred it for incineration at the thermal power plant of UAB Fortum Klaipeda. Lithuania's legislation prohibits to import waste from foreign countries for incineration.

Klaipeda's environmentalists have already appealed to Klaipeda Regional Prosecutor's Office asking to launch an investigation.
