Tanker successfully pulled off sandbank in Riga; skipper was drunk

The Latvian tanker ''Flagman 1'', which ran aground in Daugavgriva yesterday night, has been successfully pulled off the sandbank, LETA was informed by the National Armed Forces.

''The tanker has been successfully pulled off the sandbank with the help of nearby ships. No oil spill has been detected, and no persons have been injured,'' Coastguard spokeswoman Liva Veita told LETA.

 

As reported, yesterday night, a Latvian tanker ''Flagman 1'' ran aground on a sandbank in Riga's Daugavgriva, LETA found out from the National Armed Forces.

 

No persons were injured in the incident, and there are no reports of any kind of oil leak.

 

The Coast Guard received information about the incident at 2:41 a.m. this morning.

 

As LETA was informed by the Coastguard, it was not been necessary to evacuate persons from the ship.

 

The captain of the Latvian tanker ''Flagman 1'' (born 1962), which ran aground in Daugavgriva late Friday, registered 2.34 on the breathalyzer, the State Police informed LETA.

 

Following the accident, the police had arrived and at the scene immediately checked the vessel's captain. They discovered that he is heavily intoxicated. The police drew up a report, and forwarded it to the Coast Guard for continued investigation.

 

The Coast Guard received information about the incident at 2:41 a.m. Saturday.

 

According to information available on-line, the ''Flagman 1'' was constructed in 1982, and is 81 meters long and 14 meters wide.
