Estonia looks for partner for postal company Omniva

Although the Estonian Economy Ministry does not yet have a specific work plan to partially or completely sell or list on the bourse the state-owned postal company Omniva, the long-term plan is to reduce the state's ownership in the company, LETA/Delfi Ärileht reports.

Economy Ministry said that their priority at the moment is creation of a holding company for the state's companies operating in the transport sector, and once that step is taken, the next companies will be targeted.

"The state has a plan to find the areas where the state does not have to be a market participant or the owner, and should rather be a regulator. To have a free market, and the state not distort the market. One company, about which a strategic partner or listing a minority or a majority stake in the stock exchange could be considered, is Omniva," said Mihkel Loide from the Public Relations Department of the Ministry of Economy.

"However, we are talking at the moment about the intention and the ability to do it – at the moment there is no such plan of action developed. Thus, it is still very early to talk about potential strategic partners or listing the company at the stock exchange," he added.

"Whether Omniva is privatized and whether it is done partially or completely, and what strategic partners are included – there is no reason to worry about the availability of postal services in rural areas," said Loide. "The availability of a universal postal service is determined by postal law, thus by including private capital, the availability cannot get worse," he said.
