The board chairman of LDz Cargo Guntis Macs, a subsidiary of the national rail company Latvijas Dzelzcels (LDz), has handed in his resignation, LETA was informed by LDz press secretary Maris Ozols. The long-time financial director of LDz Maris Bremze has been appointed the new head of the state-owned company.

''I am thankful to Mr.Macs for his work over the years at LDz Cargo and his contribution to the development of the company. LDz Cargo, just like many other companies working in the transit sector, is going through new challenges. I would also like to point out to the excellent competence of our new CEO Maris Bremze, who is capable of heading such an important company and has an excellent reputation,'' LDz board chairman Aivars Straksas.

He emphasized that LDz Cargo, which is the largest cargo company in the Baltics, is going through a very important time in the company's history, as discussions are currently ongoing with clients and new contracts are being signed. ''It was not possible to leave the company without a CEO for even a short period of time,'' he said.

As LDz points out, Bremze has worked in the company for over 20 years in various positions, and has an excellent knowledge of the rail industry and the specifics or cargo activities.

As reported, Guntis Macs, CEO of the rail transport company LDz Cargo, believes he could lose his job already today.

Macs told the Latvian Television (LTV) show "Rita panorama" that the acting CEO of LDz Cargo’s parent company Latvijas Dzelzcels, Aivars Straksas, has invited him to a "private discussion", during which Straksas could bring up Macs' dismissal.

Macs believes that the motion to fire him could be related to "business division", namely, disagreements on possible reorganization at LDz Cargo.

Meanwhile, Transport Minister Anrijs Matiss (Unity) told LTV that decisions regarding LDz Cargo are within the competence of the LDz board. Straksas plans to meet with Macs in the near future to evaluate LDz Cargo’s performance results.

In Matiss' opinion, LDz Cargo’s performance is below par.
