Director General of Lithuanian Railways, Stasys Dailydka, and Head of PKP SA, Jakub Karnowski, discussed cooperation opportunities in the area of passenger and cargo transportation.

"We hope the visit and the signed Joint Declaration will allow to more actively cooperate on the specialist level and hold more bilateral meetings between the leadership. Poland is an important partner, thus closer cooperation would allow us to increase freight volumes in the future, cooperate in the area of logistics, improve container freight and reclaim passengers on the route between Poland and Lithuania," said the head of Lithuanian Railways.

In the first half of 2015, freight between Lithuania and Poland amounted to 108,000 tonnes. Most of it, 73,000 tonnes, were exports of timber from Lithuania to Poland. Taking into consideration the fact that annually 20 million tonnes of cargo and 2-3 million passengers cross the Lithuanian-Polish border, it is expected that the Rail Baltica project will enable to transport a part of it via railways.

More than 97% of the Rail Baltica project tasks have been completed on the stretch from the Poland-Lithuania border to Kaunas.
