The heads of Klaipeda State Seaport Authority have announced that the long considered purchase of a dredger is now taking shape, reports LETA/ELTA, referring to Vakaru ekspressas.

It is said that the modern ship could be bought within the next two years, while its construction cost could reach nearly USD 40 million (EUR 36.3 million).

"We are in the finishing straight regarding the construction of a dredger. It took us a long time as it is a rather complex vessel, while its configuration is even more complex. Consultations with companies that have vast experience in construction and configuration of dredgers lasted for nearly half a year," said Arvydas Vaitkus, Director General of Klaipeda State Seaport Authority.

It took the longest to decide on the vessel's engine. Vaitkus believes that it would be best to have a ship that could be fuelled both by diesel and gas. If the dredger ran on gas, its maintenance cost could be as much as 40% lower. According to Vaitkus, such "green ship" would contribute to the significance of the LNG terminal.
