The cargo volume transported by the Estonian state-owned railway cargo transport company EVR Cargo reached 986,000 tonnes in May 2015, which is by 11% less than at the same time last year while in the first four months of the year, EVR Cargo transported 5.4 mln tonnes of cargo, by 22% less than at the same time last year, LETA/Postimees Online reports.

EVR Cargo board chairman Ahto Altjõe said that the fall of transport volumes slowed somewhat down in May as compared to earlier months. "May transport volume was unfortunately also below a million tonnes and coming months don’t show considerable improvement," he said, adding that the biggest setbacks have taken place in container cargo transport and equipment transported on open platforms while fertiliser transport has increased.

The cargo volume of liquid mineral fuels fell 14% to 321,000 tonnes in May while the volume of fertilizers grew 23% to 290,000 tonnes. Oil shale transport volume fell by 21% to 252,000 tonnes.

The volume of container traffic fell 52% to 3,285 TEUs in May year-on-year.

Transit operations in May amounted to 658,000 tonnes, accounting for 67% of the total and decreasing 6% compared to May last year.

In five months, EVR Cargo's total cargo volume was 54 million tonnes. Mineral liquid fuels volume was 2.04 million tonnes, a decrease of 35% compared to the same period last year. The volume of fertilizers has increased by 12% to 1.46 million tonnes.

Container transport volume in five months fell 43% from the previous year, amounting to a total of 18,325 TEUs.

First five months' transit totalled 3.52 million tonnes, accounting for 65% of the total volume and falling by 26% in a year.
