The pilot programme of the controversial transport system Uber was launched on Friday in Estonia; Estonia is the first in the Baltic countries, where the program started operating, LETA/Postimees Online reports.

"Estonia is one of the world's leaders in technological innovation and we are excited about launching the pilot of UberPOP in a city that fond of technology. Uber changes the way people move in the cities. Tallinn is an ideal city because of the progressive views of residents for launching the pilot programme of car ride-pooling," said Uber's representative and international launcher Alexander Lobov via a press release.

Uber's pilot program provides travel sharing services through Uber's application. All drivers using UberPOP platform are checked by Uber before they start to work. Drivers must be at least 21 years old, pass a background check and have a no-violations license, car insurance and a personal vehicle.

While elsewhere in the world, Uber is facing serious criticism and for example, in Portugal it was banned altogether at the end of April, Estonian officials have said Uber's activities in Estonia are not illegal in the light of the new public transport law that comes in force in the autumn.
