Latvia and Korea discussed cooperation in transport sector

On 29 April 2015, the Latvian Foreign Ministry's State Secretary Andrejs Pildegovics met with the Vice Minister for Transport of Korea, Hyungkoo Yeo, to discuss cooperation between both countries in the transport sector, reports BC the Latvian MFA.

During the conversation, Andrejs Pildegovics emphasised the importance of Europe-Asia cooperation in the area of transport, and the advantages and opportunities of Latvia's transport and logistics sector. State Secretary highlighted the role of Riga International Airport in the Baltic and Northern European region. Opportunities for the Korean airlines to launch flights to Riga and build cooperation with the Latvian airlines were also outlined.

 

State Secretary Pildegovics called for the conclusion, in the near future, of negotiations on the Air Transport Agreement between Latvia and Korea; the Korean delegation in turn presented Korea's plans for the development of high-speed inland transport links and railway connections with Europe. The visitors accented in particular the successful operations of Incheon Airport and its role in Asia and on the global scale. The Korean delegation also expressed readiness to offer their recommendations to Latvia for airport modernisation and marketing activities.

 

Andrejs Pildegovics gave thanks for support during Latvia's OECD accession negotiations and expressed readiness to expand cooperation between Latvia and Korea, which will also be facilitated by the opening of the Embassy of Latvia in Seoul in the second half of 2015.

 

The Korean delegation led by Vice Minister has arrived in Latvia to take part in the Meeting of ASEM Ministers of Transport held within the framework of the Latvian Presidency of the EU Council on 29–30 April.
