When establishing such a linkage, it is important to ensure safer transport systems and movement of persons between Europe and Asia. An improved linkage means more accessible roads, facilitated trade process, and a more convenient movement of persons.

She also said that establishment of the multimodal transport linkage will also take into account today's ecological situation, following environmental protection measures and energy preservation requirements. This means that the project will require innovative solutions, which is one of the largest challenges.

Participating in the opening of the event was also Latvian President Andris Berzins, who said that an efficient and and multimodal linkage is one of the prerequisites in deepening further cooperation between Europe and Asia. "European and Asian leaders emphasized this during the ASEM Summit in Milan last year, urging to create an integrated, sustainable, safe, efficient, and convenient multimodal transport system between Europe and Asia."

Berzins stressed that Latvia, as a country with highly developed transport and logistics industry, has rich traditions in carrying out shipments between Europe and Asia, including rail freight transport between the Baltic States and Central Asia, and work on the establishment of the China-Europe land corridor line. Thus, Latvia has chosen to use its historical – first presidency of the Council of the European Union, in order to emphasize the importance of connections and raise an in-depth discussion on the opportunities of developing new, integrated transport routes.
