The State Revenue Service in Latvia has seized one of the largest haul of illegal narcotics in Latvia's history – 1,115 kilograms of hashish with a street value of between EUR 8 to 12 million, the Revenue Service informed LETA yesterday.

Six persons suspected to be involved in storing and distributing the illegal drugs have been detained. Two others, including one of the ring leaders of the drug ring, are still on the loose.

The drugs were found in a shipment of citrus fruits from Spain in a warehouse in Riga district. Hashish was packed in 665 packets. In stock, they were overloaded in specially equipped vans for further transportation, but citrus were for the market in Latvia.

SRS believes that the drugs were planned to smuggle to Russia, but Latvia was used as a transit point. At the same time, it is possible that part of the shipment could remain in the country.

After completion of all investigative measures, the drugs will be destroyed.

The smuggling was organized by the international criminal groups operating in North Africa and Spain. Some of the detainees already have a criminal record.
