Matiss: the land parcels for Rail Baltica could be alienated in Latvia

BC, Riga, 28.04.2015.Print version
If no agreement is reached on acquisition of land plots necessary for the Rail Baltica project, they could be alienated by the state, which will pay the landlords the market price for every sych individual land plot, Transport Minister Anrijs Matiss (Unity) said in an interview with the LTV show "Rita panorama" today, cites LETA.

The minister is not ruling out that a special legislation could be drawn up for this purpose.

"If we fail to reach agreement regarding acquisition of 2,000 land plots, we will never accomplish Rail Baltica," said Matiss.

There is no such legislation – it is only an idea at the moment, Matiss explained.

The minister repeatedly stressed that the state would buy the land plots in question for their market price.

As reported, the Rail Baltica project deals with construction of a new 1,435 millimeter standard-gauge railroad in the Baltic countries. The implementation of project could cost EUR 1.27 billion to Latvia and EUR 3.68 billion to the Baltic States altogether. The European Commission could co-fund 85% of the project's costs. The request for funding was submitted to the European Commission this past February, so construction of the railroad could begin in 2016. Further funding for the project is to be provided as part of the next financial period that will begin in 2020.
