Georgian Railway has joined the Viking project. The news was confirmed on Wednesday in Vilnius, during a meeting of members of the international intermodal freight logistics project, reports LETA/ELTA.

The companies GEFCO Turkey and Steveco could also become freight operators in Turkey and Finland. They would take care of freight attraction to the container train Viking in these countries.

Representatives of the companies Belintertrans, LISKI, Plaske, BALO, GEFCO Turkey, Steveco and representatives of Belarusian, Ukrainian, Bulgarian, Romanian, and Georgian Railway companies are taking part in the meetings of the Viking project's members in Vilnius.

According to Lithuania's Deputy Transport and Communications Minister Saulius Girdauskas, throughout its 12 years of operations Viking has become well known and successful, while the volume of transported freight increased more 100 times. "Viking is successful thanks to the non-stop and active work, continuous development, new opportunities and better conditions for clients. Now, one of the key tasks of Viking is to become the main freight artery between Turkey and Scandinavia," he said.

Container train Viking has won an award for Best Practice in Green Logistics and Co-Modality.

In 2008, PROMIT European Coordination Action initiated by the European Commission, recognized Viking as an example of Best Practice. In 2009, European Intermodal Association (EIA) awarded project as Best Practice in the Field of Intermodal Transport.
