Suspicion about Riga Airport workers stealing from Ryanair luggage

BC, Riga, 23.03.2015.Print version
Ryanair passengers suspect that their baggage is being tampered with at Riga International Airport, as TV3 broadcast "Neka personiga" (Nothing Personal) reported last night, cites LETA.

A resident of Latvia who works in Ireland and flies Ryanair to Latvia on a regular basis filmed a suspicious conversation between two Riga Airport employees in the baggage compartment of a Ryanair plane. The two seem to be interested in passengers' wallets, and are apparently disappointed that they can find just a few on that particular day.

Two persons can be heard participating in the conversation. Swearing profusely, the two complain to each other that the bags are stuffed with cigarette boxes and not a single wallet is to be found.

Many Ryanair passengers have complained on social media that they had valuables disappear from their baggage. The Riga Airport recommends such passengers turn to the police, but those whose valuables are missing, say that this [contacting police] is mostly pointless as "no one is ever caught."

As for the wallets mentioned, passengers checking in for Ryanair flights often end up with their hand luggage included in baggage as per Ryanair recommendations. Ryanair has agreed with the Riga Airport that airport employees inspect passengers and, if they believe that the size of hand luggage is excessive, they demand that such bags or parcels be included in the passenger's baggage allowance before boarding for the given flight.
