Substantial reduction in cargo turnover not expected in Latvia in 2015

BC, Riga, 27.02.2015.Print version
After meetings with the Russian side regarding mutual cooperation in the transportation sector, it can be concluded that a substantial reduction in cargo turnover is not expected this year, Transport Minister Anrijs Matiss (Unity) told LETA.

Matiss met with Russian Transport Minister Maxim Sokolov in Moscow yesterday.

Matiss explained that Russia is clearly developing its own ports, and he has been informed that a new port will be unveiled in St Petersburg soon, but, if nothing out of the ordinary happens, it is clear that Latvia can expect about the same volume of cargo from Russia as last year.

The Latvian transport minister said that his discussions with Sokolov were overall optimistic.

As reported, Matiss, who spent yesterday in Moscow, took the opportunity to invite his Russian counterpart to the III ASEM Summit in Riga at the end of April.

The high-level conference gathers European and Asian transport ministers, and it is being organized in Riga as part of the special events calendar during Latvia's EU presidency.

At their meeting yesterday, Matiss and Sokolov reviewed the matter of international trucking in connection with recent alterations in Russian legislation that pertain to transit procedure to third countries, and proper supervision of freight flow.
