BC, Tallinn, 26.02.2015.Print version
Estonian Maritime Administration and Saaremaa shipbuilder Baltic Workboats signed on Thursday an agreement, at the proposal of the Ministry of Economy, for the construction of a new ferry, which will sail on the Sõru-Triigi route connecting Estonia's biggest islands Saaremaa and Hiiumaa, LETA/Postimees Online reports.

Under the agreement, the ferry will be completed by the end of April 2017 and will cost 9.4 million euros including VAT.

The new Sõru-Triigi ship allows for year-round transportation and can accommodate about 22 cars or two lorries weighing 45 tons. In the future, the capacity can be increased with an additional deck. There are at least 200 life-saving devices equipped passenger seats on board.

The new ferry will be similar to the Kihnu Island and Vormsi island ferries previously ordered by the Maritime Authority.

The vessel operator will be found in open competition. The agreement between the Maritime Authority and Baltic Workboats was concluded in accordance with the valid option scheme.
