Audit Office: Latvians significantly overpaying for waste management services

BC, Riga, 05.02.2015.Print version
Residents of Latvia are overpaying for waste management services, the State Audit Office has concluded following a major audit, writes LETA.

The Audit Office carried out audits at the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Regional Development, eight local governments and three landfills, the Audit Office's public relations officer Ilva Lepina-Milzaraja told LETA. The audit's conclusion is that residents have been significantly overpaying for waste management services for two-and-a-half years.

The Audit Office's findings will be presented at a press conference tomorrow, February 6. Auditor General Elita Krumina, Audit Office's council member Marita Salgrave and senior official Eija Feldmane will participate in the press conference.

The Audit Office started the audit last summer to see whether local governments had ensured that bills for waste management services were justified and whether all environmental protection requirements were being observed.

For the purposes of the audit, the Audit Office also interviewed residents in several local governments.
