Traffic accidents in Estonia swallow 1-2% of GDP a year

Estonian government’s traffic commission concluded on Thursday that the road traffic situation has not in essence improved in recent years and is still unsatisfactory in 2015, LETA/Public Broadcasting reports.

The number of people killed in traffic accidents in 2014 decreased, but the number of accidents and people injured in them increased. "The cost of traffic accidents together with lost lives cost the state 1-2% of the GDP, and that is comparable to our defence budget," said the Director General of Highways Board Aivo Adamson.

"The grief and bereavement of people who have lost a family member cannot be expressed in numbers. Research has shown that Estonian people perceive the biggest threat to the life and health in traffic where the luck of a person in getting to the destination depends largely on other road riders. Creation of a safe traffic environment requires a broader approach and the contribution of different areas of the society," said Adamson.

Last year there were in 1,431 (1,385 in 2013) traffic accidents with human victims in Estonia. They killed 78 (81) and injured 1,741 (1,732) people.
