Estonian Air: competition will lower ticket prices

BC, Tallinn, 29.01.2015.Print version
Estonian national carrier Estonian Air said that the Latvian airBaltic’s robust expansion in Tallinn will not make them add new routes for now, but it will bring down the prices of the tickets, LETA/Postimees Online reports.

airBaltic recently opened a direct route from Tallinn to Paris and has announced of opening routes to Berlin and Vienna.

Estonian Air starts flying to Paris and Berlin in March and Vienna in April.

"We certainly receive this competition bidding with dignity. We are constantly monitoring what happens at the market, and these new routes will not increase the number of direct flights starting from Tallinn," said Estonian Air's Chief Commercial Officer Indrek Randveer. However, competition increases on the already existing lines.

Randveer said that airBaltic attracts holiday travelers while Estonian Air's main focus is on twice-a-day flights from Tallinn to destinations that are important for the development of economic relations.

It is too early to speak on whether Estonian Air would change its plans due to Air Baltic’s aggressive expansion. "Rather, we will stick to our current plans," Randveer assessed. "When competition increases, it will eventually be reflected in the price and availability of tickets," he predicts.

Randveer stated that the ticket price level is determined by competition but Estonian-language service is important too and gives Estonian Air an advantage at charter flights market.
